Practical Fashion Advice
Be Trendy, Not Trashy!!!
Here is some practical advice for modest dressing:
When you aren’t sure if your attire is immodest, it’s all right to ask for an objective opinion. Just be sure to ask someone that you know has your best interests at heart.
When in doubt, check to see that your cleavage, stomach, pelvic area and behind are not exposed. Look in a mirror from all directions, bending forward, raising your arms, and turning around to check the back view. If you feel air hitting your breasts, belly, or lower back, then you may be dressed inappropriately. I know this sounds old-fashioned, but you’d be surprised how many people leave the house without really paying attention to how they are presenting themselves.
There are many way-cool outfits that look even better with a camisole or tank-top underneath. And this is very stylish, too. Please do not let your bra straps show; that is your underwear and it looks careless and tacky. But it is very easy to find inexpensive high-cut tanks and camisoles to layer under your tops that will hide your underwear and body without compromising the style of the outfit!
A layered waistline is also fashionable. It’s ok for your undershirt to show below the hem of your top. Many shirts actually come with a double-layered look already. So if your shirt tends to ride up, or your pants ride a little low, just put a longer top underneath. And have fun with the colors. Almost anything goes with color-matching anymore.
Like to wear short skirts? Guess what? Leggings are back. There are actually some websites selling them specifically to be used for modesty. Lace-trimmed, striped, whatever. These won’t hurt your style; they’ll add to it. And they’ll keep your legs warm (and you can skip a legs-shave!).
Saggy pants? A definite fashion DON’T! When the crotch of your pants sags, that is just ugly. I’m going to be a little crude here: it makes you look like a boy, if you get my drift. Your pants should fit in this area with a little wiggle room and without pulling (ouch). If the pants aren’t made to be worn low, and you are pushing them down because you want a low waist, then you are wearing the wrong pants. Girls these days don’t know where their waists are and feel uncomfortable in pants that sit at the waist. You can get pants that sit slightly below the waist and feel good without having to “sag”.
Now, for the super-low britches that sit right above or on your pelvis. These ARE inappropriate. There is no gray area here. You can get away with this only if your shirt is long enough to cover your skin and stay down when you reach for something. There are many more people who DO NOT want to see your panties or butt-crack than who do. I know it’s trendy, but it is absolutely inappropriate and unattractive. Please be aware of whether your underwear is showing. From the front, if your pelvic bones are exposed, that is just too much and is not pretty. Wear a longer shirt or higher pants.
If you want to express yourself, then have fun with your hairstyle, color combinations, shoes (yay!), and accessories. Exposed boobs and butts are NOT style. It takes no fashion sense or thought process to expose your body. If you’d like to be seen as a fashionable girl, then keep your secrets under wraps and exhibit yourself through other trendy choices.
Here’s a challenge: try to be the most modest yet fashionable girl around. It’s ok to put some effort into your appearance. This does not make you vain. It means that you are thoughtful about how you present yourself. So try to be trendy without being trashy. (Oooh, that’s cute!) You may even become a trend-setter yourself!!!
